Equally as fascinating as Uluru, Kings Canyon is rapidly gaining popularity as an essential element to a holiday in The Centre. What makes visiting Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park so rewarding is the incredible range of sights and experiences on offer within such a concentrated area.

 Explore

A breathtaking walk around the rim of the canyon allows you to gaze down in awe at the sandstone chasm plunging 270 metres below to the canyon floor. Venture down into the depths of the chasm, and you'll discover luxuriant cycads around the permanent waterhole in the exotic Garden of Eden. You'll also find adventure in discovering the eerie, beehive-shaped rock formations, appropriately called the Lost City.

The Resort

Designed with sensitivity to the environment in mind, Kings Canyon Resort caters to all tastes and budgets. The resort nestles discreetly amongst trees and rockfaces and offers choices from a deluxe hotel to camping grounds, caravan park and budget lodge.

 Mereenie Loop Road

The Mereenie Loop Road is an unsealed road, an alternative drive from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs. It allows you to travel from Alice Springs through the West MacDonnell Ranges to Kings Canyon, and on to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park without having to backtrack to the Stuart Highway. Being mostly unsealed road, the loop is best travelled with a 4x4.

The road crosses through Aboriginal land, so you'll need a Mereenie Loop Tour Pass to travel on the road. Tour passes are available to purchase for $2.20 from Central Land Council, Central Australia Visitor Information Centre, Glen Helen Resort and Hermannsburg Petrol Station and Kings Canyon Resort.
